John Waters mania took over Los Angeles late last month, with an exhibit in his honor at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the unveiling of the legendary filmmaker’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With October in full swing, now is a great time to check out the retrospective, John Waters: Pope of Trash, the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Waters’ ground-breaking movies, aesthetic and ideas. It ends on Oct. 28.We also recommend the adjacent installation, Outside The Mainstream, paying homage to the work of other similarly alternative-minded, non-conformist filmmakers such as Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Gregg Araki, and Todd Haynes. In addition to the exhibit, the museum still has screening events through the end of October too. As of this writing, tickets are still available for Desperate Living (Oct. 20), a double feature screening of Pecker and Cry-Baby (Oct. 26), and a double feature screening of Cecil B. Demented and A Dirty Shame (Oct. 28). Mo...This is Home for Peter Gabriel

OAKLAND — A vacant East Oakland warehouse damaged in a fire less than a month ago was left gutted Wednesday morning by a two-alarm blaze, officials said.Squatters are suspected to have played roles in both fires, officials said.Wednesday’s fire at the building at the intersection of 29th Avenue and East 12th Street erupted about 5:25 a.m.When the first of some 40 firefighters arrived at the site flames were coming through the roof and a wall collapsed.Firefighters had to force entry through a fence around the building to get better access, officials said.Because of the instability of the building, firefighters did not go inside the structure to battle the blaze, but used ground and aerial hose lines to put water on it, Fire Battalion Chief James Bowron said.Firefighters were also hampered by downed power lines, officials said. The fire was declared under control at 6:35 a.m. No firefighters were injured.Related ArticlesCrashes and Disasters | Vegetation fire da...Disneyland rolls out new pumpkin-shaped Cinderella carriage for $180,000 fairy tale weddings

(BCN) -- Walking and biking in two Sunnyvale neighbors is about to become safer for children going to school. The Sunnyvale City Council is slated to award a $3.9 million contract for pedestrian improvements in the Sunnyvale Neighbors of Arbor community, which includes La Linda and the San Miguel neighborhood. Residents in these north Sunnyvale neighborhoods have been raising traffic safety concerns for years. The area borders Highway 101, with long, straight roads that safety advocates say encourage speeding, and result in crashes into homes, property damage, injuries and even one death. If the city council approves the contract, FBD Vanguard Construction will install a variety of safety features that include high visibility crosswalks and speed indicator signs.
