LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Open wrapped up, as it always does, on Father’s Day. Golf’s newest champion would be the first to tell people he’s always been a mama’s boy.Wyndham Clark’s victory Sunday will be remembered for how a 29-year-old newcomer to the big time held off some of the biggest names in the game to stamp a poignant exclamation mark on a U.S. Open that had been, to that point, kind of hard to love.Clark’s mother, Lise, died of breast cancer in 2013 — a family tragedy that sent him spiraling. Mass shootings and violence killed and wounded people across the United States this weekend, including at least 60 shot in the Chicago area alone. Four people were found shot to death in a small Idaho town, a Pennsylvania state trooper was killed in an ambush, and bullets struck 11 teenagers, killing one, at a party in Missouri.The shootings happened in cities and rural areas alike, following a surge in homicides and other violence over the past several years that accelerated during the coronavirus pandemic. Officers responded to mass shootings in Washington state, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Southern California and Baltimore.“There’s no question there’s been a spike in violence,” said Daniel Nagin, a professor of public policy and statistics at Carnegie Mellon University. “Some of these cases seem to be just disputes, often among adolescents, and those disputes are played out with firearms, not with fists.”Researchers disagree over the cause. Man stabbed to death at La Puente nightclub

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or people responsible for stabbing and killing a man at a La Puente nightclub last week.Jie Deng was fatally stabbed at a club around 1 a.m. June 14 in the 130 block of South 6th Avenue, an unincorporated area of La Puente, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.Authorities have not released any details about what led up to the attack or any suspect information.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call LASD’s homicide bureau at 323-890-5500.

Juneteenth celebrations are in full swing across Los Angeles County as Black Americans and others celebrate the newest federal holiday.June 19 marks the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free from Union soldiers. The historical event occurred in Galveston, Texas. Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Santa Ana AvenueRIALTO, CA (June 19, 2023) – Police arrested Roberto Mojo-Sanchez following a hit-and-run collision on South Riverside Avenue Monday night.The fatal crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. at the 2500 block of S. Riverside Avenue and Santa Ana Avenue.Based on the initial investigation, a northbound vehicle in the no. 1 lane of Riverside Avenue hit the pedestrian walking in the traffic lanes. The death and injuries were reported by officials in eastern Mississippi’s Jasper County.The small, rural town of Louin bore the brunt of the damage. Drone footage and photos showed wide expanses of debris-covered terrain, decimated homes and mangled trees. Ralph Woodson’s Purple Haze is not your typical tribute band. Woodson has studied his idol Jimi Hendrix to the point of being able to play the guitar behind his back and with his teeth. Woodson is a Hendrix authority, and that knowledge was on display June 16 at the kickoff of Milpitas’ Summer Concert Series at Sunnyhills Albert Augustine Jr. Memorial Park.The band’s set brought back memories for those in the crowd who grew up with Hendrix’s music. “I had a band in high school, and I played these songs,” said Henry Nichols, who graduated from Samuel Ayer High School in Milpitas in 1968.The free summer concert series rolls on through early August.
