Iran’s president begins a rare visit to Africa ‘to promote economic diplomacy’

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Iran’s president has begun a rare visit to Africa as the country, which is under heavy U.S. economic sanctions, seeks to deepen partnerships around the world.President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Kenya on Wednesday is the first to the African continent by an Iranian leader in more than a decade. He is also expected to visit Uganda and Zimbabwe and meet with the presidents of all three countries.Raisi’s visit is meant to “promote economic diplomacy, strengthen political relations with friendly and aligned countries, and diversify the export destinations,” Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement upon his arrival.Last month, Iran’s leader made his first visit to Latin America, stopping in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua. Ukrainian troops pressed on with their campaign to recapture Russian-held areas in the southeast on Sunday (9 July) as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in broadcast comments that his country's forces had "taken the initiative" after an earlier slowdown.Russian accounts said heavy fighting gripped areas outside the eastern city of Bakhmut, captured by Russian mercenary Wagner forces in May after months of battles. Kazakhstan is top target for foreign investment in post-Soviet countries

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released its report on global investments for the year 2022. The net inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) to Kazakhstan amounted to $6.1 billion, the highest figure in the past five years and 83% higher than in 2021. It surpasses the level achieved by any other post-Soviet country, writes Political Editor Nick Powell.In terms of net foreign direct investment, Kazakhstan holds the first place in the post-Soviet space, attracting $6.1bn last year. Three other countries achieved at least $2bn in net FDI, Uzbekistan with $2.5bn, Lithuania with $2.2bn and Georgia with $2bn. Apologetic armed robber holds up L.A. County sandwich shop

Police in Chatsworth are searching for a particularly remorseful armed robbery suspect who held up a popular sandwich shop last week while repeating just how sorry he was about it.  In security footage of the robbery, the suspect can be seen wearing a white mask with a black scarf around his head as he walked up to the counter at Capriotti’s on De Soto Avenue last Wednesday afternoon.  The man placed an order and then pulled out a gun, demanding money from the register.  The store employee told KTLA that the armed robbery suspect appeared especially nervous and said he repeatedly apologized for the crime, saying he was sorry, but that he desperately needed money for his family.  An armed robber, who reportedly continued to apologized, robbed a popular sandwich shop on July 5, 2023. LONDON (AP) — The Bank of England warned Wednesday that households across the U.K. are facing increasing problems from the sharp increase in interest rates but found that the country’s biggest banks are resilient enough to offer more help than they were able to before the global financial crisis 15 years ago..In its regular health check of the economy, the central bank said British households are facing higher debt burdens as a result of rising interest rates, particularly those whose fixed-rate mortgage deals have come to an end or soon will be. More than 700 firearms seized in UK in Anglo-Spanish operations

More than 700 firearms have been seized in a five-year operation by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spain's Guardia Civil to prevent replica guns that can easily be converted into lethal weapons from entering Britain, the NCA said on Sunday (9 July).The operation, which also involved international law enforcement and gun retailers, targeted forward-venting blank firearms (FVBF), which resemble guns such as Glocks.The weapons are traded lawfully in some parts of mainland Europe but are illegal to possess or import into Britain.Since 2019, the NCA and Guardia Civil - which has jurisdiction in Spain for the national control of firearms- have been jointly working on Project Vizardlike to combat the threat.The operation has so far resulted in the seizure of 703 firearms, 74 arrests and 50 convictions, the NCA said.Spain has recently enacted new legislation restricting the sale of the weapons, with customers now required to produce Spanish identity and police approval documentati...
