Destroy Boys Live Up to Their Name at Coachella: Sacramento indie punks Destroy Boys rocked the Sonora Stage on Saturday at Coachella Weekend One, and we caught up with guitarist Violet Mayugba shortly afterwards…How did the first set go?Oh my god, it was amazing. It was so cool. It was very overwhelming because we don’t have a lot of festival experience. But it was so cool. Everyone treated us so well. The crowd was awesome. It was just, overall, super fun. Had you been to Coachella before? No, never.Have you played any outdoor festivals?Yeah, we’d done Riot Fest before – that’s the biggest one we’ve ever done. We’ve done quite a few smaller ones. We did Sad Summer Fest for a little bit. But Coachella is “the one.” I’ve been telling a lot of people, when I was a little kid Coachella was the pinnacle of success for bands in my eyes. So the fact that we’re doing it now, and the fact that we get to do it twice, is really awesome. There wasn’t a lot of punk rock there t...SF Giants’ Alex Wood leaves start early with apparent leg injury

MIAMI — If there was one thing the Giants were built to withstand, it was injuries to their deep starting pitching staff. After navigating multiple absences in their lineup through the first two-plus weeks of the season, that roster construction strategy will possibly face its first test.Left-hander Alex Wood left his start Tuesday against the Marlins early after pulling up gimpy while fielding a sacrifice bunt attempt in the third inning. The Giants have not announced announced the injury nor its severity, but it appeared that Wood hurt his left leg on the play.Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings led off the inning with a double, the first hit allowed by Wood, and their No. 9 hitter, Jean Segura, attempted to move him over to third with a bunt attempt that pulled Wood off the mound to the third base side. He cut off third baseman J.D. Davis, fielded the ball and fired to first in time to record the out, but afterward began to grab at his upper right leg.Alex Wood came out of the game af...Letters: Deeper dredging | Rate change | Oakland baseball | Recycling example | Well-rounded views | Board at fault

Due to their size and weight, mega-ships are fueled by heavily polluting fossil fuels. These fuels emit air quality pollutants that harm human health and add greenhouse gas emissions that disrupt our climate.2. Excessive dredging for channel and basin widening and deepening will irreversibly disturb marine and coastal ecosystems, threaten wildlife and impact the bay’s water quality.Ports must prioritize development for industry decarbonization — including electrification and zero-emission fuel bunkering for shi...One of Bay Area’s largest homeless shelters to launch in Redwood City

One of the Bay Area’s largest homeless shelters is set to open in Redwood City, a key milestone in San Mateo County’s ambitious plan to move everybody off the street. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, local officials and project backers touted the 240-unit “navigation center” east of Highway 101 as a cost-effective and “dignified” model for getting unhoused people into lasting homes, as pressure mounts to solve the Bay Area’s worsening homelessness crisis.“Let’s all celebrate today this opening, with the hope that other communities in the Bay Area will follow the lead of San Mateo County and the city of Redwood City to end homelessness throughout our region,” said billionaire Silicon Valley developer John Sobrato, who helped plan the project. The center, at 275 Blomquist St. in a commercial and industrial area near Redwood Creek, will provide residents with private rooms and bathrooms, as well as onsite medical, mental he...Letters: Car power | WNBA at bay | Musical light | Biden delivers | Leaders failing | No division

Read more Letters to the Editor.Powering homes withcars is nothing newI had to smile today when I read the lead story, “How your car can power your home.” (Page A1, April 17) Heck, we were doing that with a Land Rover 30 years ago when we lived in Tanzania. We were on the faculty of a theological college where the voltage was “220 volts plus or minus 220 volts.” Seriously.Because of this, I put together a system of battery chargers, golf cart batteries, an inverter, and a collection of meters and relays that stored power when it was available and automatically switched over to power lights, computers, music systems and whatever when it was not.At times, though, the electricity deserted us for several days and things went flat. That’s when we started the Land Rover and ran cables into the battery pack. It wasn’t fast, but it was reliable.Eventually, we broke down and bought a generator. But Land Rover was there before Tesla.James Bangsun...Letters: Coyote Valley | Building hope | Feinstein’s future | Problem cops | States’ rights

Green Foothills was proud to lead the Protect Coyote Valley coalition, which successfully campaigned for all of Coyote Valley to be zoned for open space and agriculture in 2021. POST’s purchase helps create a permanently connected corridor of open space where wildlife can cross the valley safely.Sadly, a few Coyote Valley landowners are still trying to pave over their land rather than steward it responsibly. A few are suing the city of San Jose to try to get their land rezoned for development and seeking permits to build an energy facility there. This is unfortunate.
