LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — More than 1,000 people packed a cavernous church Sunday night, and hundreds more spilled outside, to hug, sing, weep and seek comfort in the wake of Maine’s most deadly mass shooting. The crowd gathered for the vigil at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston, where days earlier a gunman fatally shot 18 people. Some people put their heads in their hands and wept when the names were read aloud. At one point, members of the crowd raised their hands to say “I love you” in American Sign Language in honor of the four members of Maine’s deaf community killed in the shooting.“We will not be defined by the tragedies that happened,” said the Rev. Todd Little from the First United Pentecostal Church. “Fear, anxiety and trepidation will not dictate our present or our future.”The vigil came two days after the body of suspected gunman Robert Card was found. The 40-year-old's body was discovered in a trailer at a recycling center in Lisbon Falls. AUSTIN (KXAN) — Maalik Murphy isn't trying to be anybody but himself while he has the reins of the high-powered Texas Longhorns offense. As the backup quarterback coming into the season, Murphy filled in admirably for Quinn Ewers against BYU on Saturday, throwing a pair of touchdowns to Adonai Mitchell and completing 64% of his passes for 170 yards. He threw an interception that he admitted was a "young mistake" and lost a fumble after getting hit from his blind side, but in the end, he was still dancing around the field and keeping it loose. After Houston comeback, Texas defense made sure that wouldn’t happen vs. BYU "That's just my personality," he said after the game. "The coaches told me not to change and just to be me, so that's what I did. I was dancing and enjoying my time out there."Support from his teammates is something Murphy said helped him adjust to being the main guy while Ewers is, according to head coach Steve Sarkisian, "week-to-week" with a shoulder injury. With “Shake It Off” blaring over the stadium loudspeakers, the Broncos finally gave a Swiftie kick to that 16-game losing streak to Kansas City that we thought might never end.“Smiles!” Broncos president Domani Leech exclaimed Sunday as he departed a happy locker room with something sweet to finally show the crazy-rich Waltons for their $4.65 billion investment in a downtrodden NFL franchise:Denver 24, Patrick Mahomes 9.Your eight-year nightmare is over, Broncos Country.Celebrate? Patrick Mahomes offered no excuses for his poor performance in Kansas City’s 24-9 loss to the Broncos on Sunday. The Chiefs’ star quarterback didn’t blame the flu-like illness that socked him in the gut Saturday night, nor the frigid weather at Empower Field at Mile High.Nope, he pointed his finger at the Chiefs’ lack of execution and credited a Broncos defense that limited him to a 59.2 passer rating, the second-worst in his 87 NFL starts. He had a 57.3 rating in 2021, also against the Broncos.“The Broncos did a great job of making us be patient and they had a great game plan, and we didn’t execute well enough to score any (touchdowns),” said Mahomes, who not only lost to the Broncos for the first time in his career but also suffered his first road loss against an AFC West team.Mahomes completed 24 of 38 passes for 241 yards with two interceptions and was sacked three times.
