First Republic Bank seized, sold in fire sale to JPMorgan By KEN SWEET (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Regulators seized troubled First Republic Bank early Monday, making it the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history, and promptly sold all of its deposits and most of its assets to JPMorgan Chase in a bid to end the turmoil that has raised questions about the health of the U.S. banking system. It’s the third midsize bank to fail in less than two months. The only larger bank failure in U.S. history was Washington Mutual, which collapsed at the height of the 2008 financial crisis and was also taken over by JPMorgan in a similar government-orchestrated deal.“Our government invited us and others to step up, and we did,” said Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase. Jean Carroll’s lawyer on grounds they were argumentative.Tacopina said Kaplan has made “pervasive unfair and prejudicial rulings” in the case on trial for a week.Tacopina said it wasn’t fair that Kaplan allowed Carroll to describe to the jury of a vengeful Trump having two tables of lawyers when she “has a comparable amount of lawyers.”Trump also complained that Kaplan would allow Natasha Stoynoff to testify without his lawyers questioning her first outside of the jury’s presence. How Brandon Hughes’ return to the IL with left knee inflammation will shake up the Chicago Cubs bullpen Learning how to manage left knee inflammation is part of Chicago Cubs left-hander Brandon Hughes’ everyday reality. The issue stems from Hughes’ 2015 surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. Since then, his left knee has no cartilage and is essentially bone-on-bone, Hughes explained, constantly leading to inflammation. It flared up in spring training, causing him to open the season on the injured list. His knee again became bothersome to the point that the Cubs placed him on the 15-day IL Saturday, retroactive to Thursday.Hughes’ latest situation began after the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field last weekend.“It always will flare up a little bit after each (outing),” Hughes said Sunday, “and then it’s just a point of, like, how much it fills with (fluid), I guess.”Hughes, 27, appeared in five games between IL stints, allowing two runs, two walks and tallying nine strikeouts in 5⅔ innings. ‘El Chapo’ sons charged with smuggling cheap fentanyl to US MEXICO CITY (AP) — With Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán serving a life sentence, his sons steered the family business into fentanyl, establishing a network of labs churning out massive quantities of the cheap, deadly drug that they smuggled into the U.S., prosecutors revealed in a recent indictment.Although Guzmán’s trial revolved around cocaine shipments, the case against his sons exposes the inner workings of a cartel undergoing a generational shift as it worked “to manufacture the most potent fentanyl and to sell it in the United States at the lowest price,” according to the indictment unsealed April 14 in Manhattan.Synthetic opioids — mostly fentanyl — now kill more Americans every year than died in the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined, feeding an argument among some politicians that the cartels should be branded terrorist organizations and prompting once-unthinkable calls for U.S. military intervention across the border.“The problem with fentanyl,...

‘A Small Light’ focuses on those who helped Anne Frank NEW YORK (AP) — Liev Schreiber was visiting conflict-ravaged Ukraine when he got a script about real-life events some 80 years ago that felt strangely timely. It was a story set during the 1942 occupation of the Netherlands by the Nazis and the way some Dutch risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust.Celebrated diarist Anne Frank is in it, but she’s almost peripheral. Instead, National Geographic’s “A Small Light” focuses on a young, newly married woman who helped hide Frank and who provided food and other necessities at great risk. The series streams on Disney+ on May 1 and on Hulu the following day.“The central storyline being about this young woman coming of age and dealing with her marriage gives you this incredibly intimate perspective on what it’s like to have one’s life interrupted by an invasion,” Schreiber said. “It felt so resonant to me.” “A Small Light” stars Bel Powley as Miep Gies, a real-life heroine for protecting eight people in a secret annex in...
