Video: San Francisco street turns into ‘Wild West’ at 2 a.m. “It should have been that it is lower because we opened emergency evacuation center, we kept people in tents, the county has given out rain gear… should have been we’re lower than last year but instead we’re higher,” said Shaunn Cartwright, a homeless advocate with the Unhoused Response Group. Cartwright blames the problem on the City of San Jose, saying officials sweep homeless from one place to another without a permanent plan. The weather this year hasn’t helped.“We’ve shown up and seen people in the pouring rain,” she said.KRON ON is streaming news live now.embed-container { position: relat...Idaho governor signs ‘abortion trafficking’ bill into law

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill into law Wednesday that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion without parental consent. The law is the first of its kind in the U.S. and creates a new crime of “ abortion trafficking,” barring adults from obtaining abortion pills for a minor or “recruiting, harboring or transporting the pregnant minor” without the consent of the minor’s parent or guardian. Anyone convicted of breaking the law will face two to five years in prison and could also be sued by the minor’s parent or guardian. Parents who raped their child will not be able to sue, though the criminal penalties for anyone who helped the minor obtain an abortion will remain in effect. To sidestep violating a constitutional right to travel between states, Idaho’s law makes illegal only the in-state segment of a trip to an out-of-state abortion provider. Opponents have promised a legal battle.“Yet again, Idaho’s governor disregarded con...LSU’s national championship women’s team honored with parade

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU star forward Angel Reese sat in the back of an orange convertible Corvette, waving to thousands of fans lining the roadside — and also waving her hand in front of her face from time to time, repeating a gesture that caused a stir at the end of the national championship game. The Tigers paraded across campus and into the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Wednesday night for ceremonies to honor their first NCAA women’s national championship, captured Sunday with a 102-85 victory over Iowa in Dallas.“I’m trying not to cry,” said coach Kim Mulkey, a Louisiana native who left behind the three-time national champion powerhouse she’d built at Baylor two years ago to take over at LSU.“This is my home,” she said, noting that her mother was in the arena.Reese was not among the players who spoke at the event. But she has been outspoken on several topics this week. She was unapologetic when questioned about waving her hand in front of her face while s...Idaho governor signs ‘abortion trafficking’ bill making it illegal to help minors get abortion without parental consent

PARIS (AP) — When Christophe Galtier left Nice to coach Paris Saint-Germain, he had hopes of leading the club to its first Champions League title. Now he heads back to Nice for Saturday’s league game fighting to save his job after PSG’s terrible run of form. Last weekend’s loss to Lyon was PSG’s second straight home defeat in the league and eighth across all competitions this year.“That’s far too many. Match after match we’re using up our trump cards,” Galtier said. “Everyone, myself included, needs to be fully aware of the situation and the work that needs to be done.”The Lyon loss has given second-place Lens and third-place Marseille — both six points behind PSG — a glimmer of hope with nine rounds left. Galtier was bitterly disappointed with how his players appeared to give up against a modest Lyon side and issued a wake-up call.“We gave up quickly. We lacked character and personality. There’s disappointment but also anger,” he said. “We need to conduct our...Kreider, Motte each score twice, Rangers beat Lightning 6-3

PARIS (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to fill the streets of France Thursday for the 11th day of nationwide resistance to a government proposal to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. The furious public reaction to the plan has cornered and weakened French President Emmanuel Macron. France’s highest body on constitutional affairs will be considering the higher retirement age. The Constitutional Council is expected to issue a ruling this month and Macron’s opponents hope it will severely limit his proposal. In many countries, raising the retirement age by two years wouldn’t throw the nation into such disarray. But the French public is overwhelmingly against pension reform, and unrelenting demonstrations against it have morphed into wider anger.HOW ANGRY ARE THE FRENCH? Mounds of up to 10,000 tons of trash piled up on the streets of Paris during a weekslong strike by sanitation workers over a plan that would push their retirement age from 57 to 59 — ...Thousands still missing from 20 years of Iraq’s turmoil

BAGHDAD (AP) — Nawal Sweidan quietly folded her son’s clothes and straightened the bedsheets in his room as she always used to do when he was out at work or at university. She still does it regularly, even though he hasn’t been home for almost 10 years since he was taken away by militiamen. Her son Safaa vanished in late July 2014. At around 1:30 a.m., just days before the holy month of Ramadan was to end and holiday celebrations were to begin, a group of men showed up at the family’s doorstep and asked for Safaa, a law student and postal carrier in his early 20s.“They told us they just wanted to question him and will return him soon,” Sweidan said. Twenty years after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, much of the conflict and sectarian bloodletting it unleashed has subsided. But those years left a legacy of thousands of people — or perhaps tens of thousands, like Safaa — who went missing, and their families feel forgotten as they seek answers about their loved ones’ fates. As it t...Latest news
