Skim board riders battling Laguna Beach officials over Aliso Beach sand berm

A battle is brewing between the city of Laguna Beach, which recently took control of Aliso Beach from the county, and skim boarder riders who claim the officials are unfairly considering a new law that would cut into some of their fun. One of the biggest attractions at Aliso Beach for the wave riders is a naturally occurring sand berm that separates Aliso Creek from the ocean. When it’s breached under the right conditions, it’s an excellent wave for skimboarding. “It does break naturally more often than not,” Greg Viviani told KTLA. “Also, the wave riders like to break it as well because it does create a standing wave and it creates sandbar out front, which creates better waves to ride as well.” However, the city is looking at a new ordinance that would ban skim boarder riders and others from digging out the berm over concerns about polluted water from upstream going into the ocean too often. Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen spoke to KTLA last month about the is...Anaheim Hills residents concerned as funds for landslide prevention system run out

Concerns over a potentially devastating landslide are growing in Anaheim Hills as the funds to operate a pumping system to prevent landslides in the area are depleted. The pumps were installed in the aftermath of a 1993 landslide that destroyed homes and forced dozens of residents to evacuate.Following a destructive massive landslide in Rolling Hills Estates earlier this week, residents in Anaheim Hills are reminded of the dangers lurking in their backyards.Signs posted by the city on Serrano Avenue Thursday warn drivers and visitors that they are now entering a landslide risk area. “After heavy El Nino rains in the early 1990s, we saw land begin to move down slopes and under homes resulting in the evacuation of 50 homes, some damaged, others left to revert back to lenders,” explained Mike Lyster, a spokesperson for the city of Anaheim. “Really, a very difficult time for these neighborhoods here 30 years ago.”City officials said saturated hillsides were determined to be a cause of th...Deputy Injured in Two-Vehicle Collision on Miller Road [Scottsdale, AZ]

As with Pride events last month, this bears repeating: the anti-gay and active normalization of hate by politicians in certain parts of the country and on social media, has made everything reflecting LGBTQ culture in 2023 more significant and vital. Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Film Festival, now in its 41st year, begins this week and it is no exception. There is strength in numbers and Outfest’s packed 11 days of programming serves as an important counter to the bigotry that some seek to sow in our country. In June, important events like this can get lost in the rainbow-hued happenings, so it’s nice that this event happens later. Queer creators, story-tellers and allies in entertainment are showcased in 23 venues across Los Angeles, and it’s all headquartered in the Directors Guild of America in West Hollywood. (At press time, SAG-AFTRA announced its strike alongside the WGA, so check the event’s social media for updates as to how it might affect the schedule). As of now, Outfest Los ...Rare do-over in California Capitol revives bill to toughen child sex-trafficking penalties

A bill that would declare child sex-trafficking a serious felony and toughen sentences for the crime would seem like an easy sell to most politicians. But not in Sacramento this week.California’s ruling Democrats have been working for years to reduce criminal penalties under the banner of social justice, hearkening to reformers who say the criminal justice system is stacked against the poor and racial minorities. On Wednesday, however, some Democratic lawmakers went a step too far for Gov. Gavin Newsom and newly named Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. After six Democrats refused to vote the Republican child sex trafficking bill, SB 14, out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, Newsom and Rivas intervened, and on Thursday, under pressure, the committee changed course and revived the bill.It was a rare rebuke from a governor with presidential aspirations and a signal that Democratic leaders in California must be wary about being labeled as “soft on crime.”“This ...Man arrested after trying to steal catalytic converter in Walnut Creek: police
