Political ‘swatting’ incidents may prompt heavier penatlies By Jeff Amy | Associated PressATLANTA — A spate of false reports of shootings at the homes of public officials in recent days could be setting the stage for stricter penalties against so-called swatting in more states.U.S. Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Georgia U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost have been among the victims.Several Georgia lawmakers targeted say they want increased penalties for swatting, like laws enacted this year in Ohio and Virginia. Similar bills are pending in other states and Congress. Here’s a look at the issue and what could be done about it:WHAT IS ‘SWATTING’?Swatting is the act of making a prank call to emergency services to prompt a response at a particular address. The goal is to get authorities, particularly a SWAT team, to show up.Calls in multiple states in recent days featured the voice of a man calling himself “Jamal,” claiming he had shot his wife because she was ...

Analysis: Jets limping to finish line of another season filled with losses and disappointment One more game. That’s all that’s left in a season that went terribly wrong for the New York Jets just as it was getting started. And it’s ending just about how most thought it would when Aaron Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his regular-season debut with the team — with lots of losses and disappointment. The Jets (6-10) clinched their fourth straight season of double-digit defeats with a 37-20 drubbing in Cleveland on Thursday night. “I got a chance, obviously, to watch it on the plane and again this morning,” coach Robert Saleh said Friday. “Pretty much what we thought coming out of the game.”Translation: It was an uncharacteristically rough first half for the defense, which came in ranked No. 3 overall but allowed Joe Flacco to carve it up as the Browns raced to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and 34-17 at halftime. “Defensively, the first quarter, just a little bit off,” Saleh said. “It just wasn’t like us, in terms of from a precision stand...

Here are some of the latest developments:The migrant crisis could ‘crush local economies’Even US cities far from the Mexican border are reaching a breaking point trying to manage the influx of migrants, several mayors told CNN on Friday.Since last year, Texas Republican Gov. Those cities include Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, DC – all of which are led by Democratic mayors.“The international crisis that we are experiencing right now is being subsidized by local economies,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson told “CNN This Morning” Friday.“That is not sustainable, and that’s why we need Congress to actually have appropriations to make sure that what refugees from Ukraine receive, we have ...

The Biden administration once more bypasses Congress on an emergency weapons sale to Israel WASHINGTON (AP) — For the second time this month the Biden administration is bypassing Congress to approve an emergency weapons sale to Israel as Israel continues to prosecute its war against Hamas in Gaza under increasing international criticism. The State Department said Friday that Secretary of State Antony Blinken had told Congress that he had made a second emergency determination covering a $147.5 million sale for equipment, including fuses, charges and primers, that is needed to make the 155 mm shells that Israel has already purchased function.“Given the urgency of Israel’s defensive needs, the secretary notified Congress that he had exercised his delegated authority to determine an emergency existed necessitating the immediate approval of the transfer,” the department said.“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to ensure Israel is able to defend itself against the threats it faces,” it said. The emergency determinat...

Finally Clearing Out

Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 13:59:27 GMT

Finally Clearing Out The last few days have been all about the clouds, drizzle, fog, and showers. In the short term (as in tonight into tomorrow morning) that will continue to be the case. If you are heading out tonight, expect more clouds, drizzle, and fog, much like we had today. A rogue light shower is possible, but what’s out there is hardly umbrella worthy now and it will stay that way tonight. With the clouds locked overhead, temperatures won’t drop very far, falling to the upper 30s and near 40° overnight.Tomorrow is our improvement day. That improvement won’t happen until late in the day so when you wake up on Saturday morning, expect more low clouds with some drizzle, and that rogue light shower. It’ll stay that way until about noon, when we finally will punch some drier air in. It’s a slow process, so first we’ll get rid of the drizzle, then the clouds. Any hope of the clouds thinning out and showing a few peeks of sun will be mid to late afternoon — l...

Maura Healey says Massachusetts has complied with overflow site requirement

Maura Healey says Massachusetts has complied with overflow site requirement Gov. Maura Healey’s administration said Friday it believed it had fulfilled a requirement to set up an overflow site for families with children and pregnant people waiting for placement in Massachusetts’ emergency shelter system.Clearing the overflow site hurdle would allow the administration to access millions more in already allocated state funds to respond to the “ongoing humanitarian crisis and influx of families seeking shelter,” according to state law.A Healey spokesperson confirmed the administration felt it had complied with the statutory requirement to set up one or multiple locations as the waitlist for shelter hit 400 families as of Friday.“Our administration has set up safety net sites for families who need a place to stay, and we will continue to work closely with our local, state and federal partners to support the needs of families in Massachusetts,” Healey spokeswoman Karissa Hand said in a statement.Satisfying a component of a bill the Legislature passed...
