Gunmen abducted 14 police officers in the Mexican state of Chiapas

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A commando of armed men abducted 14 state police officers in southern Mexico on Tuesday, prompting a heavy deployment of federal and local forces, authorities said.The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection in Chiapas state said in a statement the 14 officers were all men and an air and ground operation was underway to locate them. An official with the state police force, who asked not to be quoted because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said the agents were traveling to the capital of Chiapas in a personnel transport truck when they were intercepted by several trucks with gunmen.The women in the vehicle were released while the men were taken away, the official said.The abduction occurred on the highway between Ocozocoautla and Tuxtla Gutiérrez.Violence in the Mexican border region with Guatemala has escalated in recent months amid a territorial dispute between the Sinaloa Cartel – which has dominated the area – and the Jalisco New G...

TERRA CEIA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Department of Health has issued a statewide mosquito-borne illness advisory after four locally contracted cases of malaria were reported along the Gulf Coast south of Tampa.On Monday, a health alert issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also noted that another case has been detected in Texas, marking the first time there has been a local spread of malaria in the United States in 20 years.The four residents in Sarasota County received treatment and have recovered, according to the state’s Department of Health advisory. Malaria, caused by a parasite that spreads through bites from Anopheles mosquitoes, causes fever, chills, sweats, nausea and vomiting, and headaches. Riverside doctor charged with sexual assault; police seek additional victims

A 52-year-old doctor has been arrested and faces charges of sexual assault against a customer at a local medical spa in Riverside, authorities announced on Tuesday.  Investigators with the Riverside Police Department’s Sexual Assault-Child Abuse Unit began looking into allegations of the assault earlier in June after an adult female alleged she was victimized during a consultation exam at Timeless Skincare Laser Clinic in the 6900 block of Brockton Avenue.  Dr. Sam Sannoufi, a resident of Newport Beach and owner of Timeless Skincare Laser Clinic Primary Care Family Practice in Riverside, was identified as the suspect.  Detectives arrested the 52-year-old on Tuesday and booked him into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of sexual assault.
