Celtics respond after slow start, take control of series with Game 2 victory over Hawks For the first six minutes on Tuesday night, the Celtics were at their worst. They were lazy on offense. Jaylen Brown committed three turnovers in the opening minutes. Their defense – which was so good in Game 1 – was an open door. The Celtics were expecting a strong Hawks response and they got it.But when Joe Mazzulla turned to his bench, everything changed. The deepest team in the NBA showed itself again, even if Mazzulla has only gone eight deep to start the playoffs. Robert Williams, then Malcolm Brogdon entered the game and the Celtics went off and running. After falling behind early, the Celtics ripped off a huge first-half run and never looked back as they took complete control of their first-round series with a 119-106 Game 2 victory.Jayson Tatum scored 29 points – including five 3-pointers – and some big buckets down the stretch as the Celtics held off several rallies from Dejounte Murray and the Hawks. It was his supporting cast that spurred the C’s to a commanding 2-0 serie...

Alabama House OKs ban on trans athletes at a college level MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Transgender women in Alabama would be prohibited from joining female sports teams in college under legislation advanced Tuesday by the Alabama House of Representatives — a part of a wave of restrictions on transgender people being pushed in conservative states. The House voted 83-5 in favor of the legislation that would extend a 2021 ban on transgender athletes in K-12 sports teams to include college teams. The bill states that sports teams “designated for females, women, or girls shall not be open to a biological male.” Similarly, a “biological female” would also not be allowed to participate on teams for boys and men. The legislation now moves to the Alabama Senate. “Forcing women to compete against biological men would reverse decades of progress women have made for equal opportunity in athletics,” Republican Rep. Susan DuBose, the bill’s sponsor, told lawmakers. DuBose said that “no amount of hormone therapy can undo” physical advantages. At least 20 othe...

Red Sox win against the Twins decided in a see-saw, full-of-suspense 10th inning BOSTON — All night, it seemed, Boston Red Sox hitters were mounting threat after threat, on the verge of breaking through against Sonny Gray. They never did, a credit to the veteran starter on a night when he seemed to be working without his best stuff.Red Sox starter Chris Sale looked like vintage Sale at the beginning of the game, striking out seven of nine batters the first time through the order. And yet, though the Red Sox threatened all night and the Twins were limited to just four hits, the game wasn’t decided until a see-saw 10th inning when, after the Twins scored two runs in the top of the inning, the Red Sox walked off with three more. After a lengthy review where both teams were standing on the field awaiting their fate, Alex Verdugo’s hit to right was confirmed, handing the Red Sox a 5-4 10-inning win at Fenway Park. That came after a Reese McGuire two-run single earlier in the inning that tied the game, washing out the two runs the Twins had scored on a Byron Buxton sacr...
