SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Mourners streamed into San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday to pay their respects to the late U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, honoring her as fearless, smart and the glue who kept the city together after two political assassinations that catapulted her into the mayor’s office and the national spotlight.“She wasn’t afraid to do a man’s job. She wasn’t afraid to be a senator. She wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted,” said Lawanda Carter, 48, of San Francisco. “And that’s encouragement for us women now to have courage.”Carter was among the scores of everyday San Franciscans and political leaders alike who brought flowers, bowed their heads or clasped their hands in prayer as they stood before Feinstein’s casket, which was draped in an American flag and on display behind velvet ropes. Many said they had never met Feinstein, but wanted to honor an indefatigable public servant who fought to level the playing field for women, members of the LGBTQ community and ...Broward College names Barbara Bryan as new acting president, replacing interim leader after 1 day

There was a play during Wednesday’s training camp practice – Jrue Holiday’s first with the Celtics – that left its spectators in a state of unusual excitement.Hours later, Celtics co-owners Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca sat on a podium inside the Auerbach Center still marveling at what they had witnessed, struggling to describe it. Jaylen Brown, as they told it, was driving to the hoop with a full head of steam when Holiday stepped in and stopped him in his tracks.Over Brown’s seven years in Boston, it was something Pagliuca had never seen before.“One of the most incredible things I’ve seen in practice,” Pagliuca said.Another play in Wednesday’s practice left Brad Stevens beaming. A self-proclaimed fan of the shell drill, Stevens lit up when Holiday knocked into assistant coach Phil Pressey and “almost made him quit coaching when he was guarding him,” he joked.“That made me so happy,” Stevens said. For nearly 30 minutes, Stevens, Grousbeck and Pagliuca continuously expressed their...Maura Healey ‘distressed’ by migrants displacing veterans for Army-Navy game, but won’t provide specifics on migrant housing plan

A late-to-the-game Gov. Maura Healey said she is “troubled” veterans and service academy graduates were bounced from their hotel rooms for the Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium because of newly arrived migrants, but she once again refused to provide specifics on the cost and length of her motel migrant housing plan. The Democratic governor – a day after her press office ignored questions about the hotel room mess – directed her Veterans’ Services Secretary Jon Santiago to “reach out” to displaced veterans but deflected any blame for their reservations being canceled.“I’m very distressed to learn that any veteran may have been moved from a hotel, who had booked a hotel for that game,” she said. “As I understand it, those decisions were made by area hotels.”That’s somewhat deceptive on Healey’s part because the reason the hotel rooms were canceled was because the hotel chain got a much more lucrative offer from the state to house the migrants for an indefinite period. And it’s because ...Democratic discontent with Biden growing in Massachusetts over migrant response

Democratic discontent with the Biden administration’s handling of an influx of migrant arrivals is growing in Massachusetts, including among top officials on Beacon Hill who are grappling with how to deal with an emergency shelter system that is costing the state tens of millions a month.Gov. Maura Healey has repeatedly called on President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to shuttle funds to the state and ease bureaucratic red tape in an effort to speed up work authorizations so people can quickly transition out of temporary housing. But Bay State Democrats appear to be growing frustrated with what they say is a lack of help from Biden and federal officials in Washington.“The guy is running for president, he better start paying attention to this,” House Speaker Ronald Mariano told reporters at the State House Wednesday when asked if the Biden administration should appoint a point person to coordinate with states on response efforts.Senate President Karen Spilk...Catching the wind: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island band together for future contracts
