Number of kids ingesting edibles rises, lawmakers react

ABLANY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- Lawmakers are proposing legislation to hold those who are selling cannabis illegally accountable. This happening after some people, including children ingested cannabis edibles without even realizing it. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows in 2017 there were 207 reported cases of cannabis edible ingestions in children younger than age 6. In 2021 that number rose to 3054 cases. Officials crack down on illegal cannabis sales "We must do everything we can to save lives, and prevent this crisis from getting any more out of hand," said Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio who is proposing legislation to enact stricter penalties for people who don’t follow the rules. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced scheduled hunting seasons for black bear and elk in the state. Applications for hunting permits will be accepted beginning May 1.The MDC will offer 400 permits for black bear and five permits for bull elk. Only Missouri residents will be allowed to apply for hunting permits. Persons must be 11 years of age by the first day of a respective hunting season will qualify.The application period runs from May 1 to May 31, with a $10 fee per applicant. People can apply online at mdc.mo.gov/buypermits, through the Department of Conservation's free MO Hunting app, through a permit vendor, or by calling the MDC at 1-800-392-4115.All permits will be assigned via a random drawing, according to the MDC. ST. LOUIS -- A man has turned himself in to police Wednesday for the killing of Eddie Johnson, 30. Travon Stevenson, 28, faces murder and other charges. He is currently being held without bond.Police responded to a report of a shooting at the Arlington Grove Apartments , located in the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood, on March 7 at around 2:45 pm. They found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect ran away before officers arrived.Investigators believe the victim was involved in a domestic dispute with the mother of his child. Three workers at a senior living facility in Louisville are facing criminal charges after police allege two of them falsely reported an assault that never occurred between two elderly residents.Joshua Merrill, a staff member at Balfour at Cherrywood Village, and Kara Roberts, a contractor, face charges of attempt to influence a public servant — a felony — as well as caretaker neglect and two counts of false reporting, court records show.Dainzu Mosqueda, another employee, was charged with one count related to the mandatory reporting of mistreatment of at-risk elders.Merrill, who was arrested this week and posted $5,000 bond, is set to appear in Boulder County District Court on March 28 for advisement of charges. The FBI’s Los Angeles office is offering a $20,000 reward for information regarding the kidnapping of a U.S. citizen in Mexico last month.Maria del Carmen Lopez, 63, was kidnapped from her residence in Pueblo Nuevo, Colima on Feb. 9, the FBI said in a news release without elaborating.Maria del Carmen Lopez is seen in a series of photos released by the FBI on March 16, 2023.
