I met Sarah Collins Rudolph, a small woman nestled into a corded khaki sofa, last month in her darkened living room in Birmingham, Alabama. The room is something of a shrine, commemorating the 1963 act of terror that killed four little girls but spared a fifth. She was that fifth little girl. She survived the Ku Klux Klan bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham 60 years ago. Her sister and her friend were among the girls killed. In the years leading up to that attack, white terrorists, raging against integration, were detonating bombs in Birmingham so often that the city earned an ignominious nickname: Bombingham.Rudolph was 12 at the time. That day, the blast sprayed her body, including her eyes, with glass. She was found standing, stunned, in the rubble. She was rushed to a hospital. One eye was lost, but the other was saved, with glass still in it, the doctors afraid of removing it and taking the chance of plunging the girl into total blindness. When she was told tha...Three dead in head-on collision on Illinois Route 4

The Ouija Boards Love Washington: Keith Cooper of L.A. band the Ouija Boards told us about his Joey Washington experience (and more).Keith Cooper: The best gig I ever saw!? This is difficult because I’ve seen so many incredible ones!Green Day was my first real concert, and the raw energy, combined with Billy’s command of the audience blew my 10 year old mind. I also saw The Beach Boys when I was very young and the harmonies and musicianship definitely left a lasting impression on me.Morrissey with Joan Jett is definitely up there. Everyone teared up when Joan Jett played ‘Crimson & Clover’ and Mozz got everyone fired up with his tunes and the Smiths songs.I saw Prince destroy at his residency at the L.A. Forum which just made me realllllly want to practice more. But I think the BEST GIG EVER- was when my friend Joey’s band was playing Molly Malone’s. It was their album release party and they had invited all of their friends and some industry people. When they’re playi...Vallejo settles with alleged police ‘badge-bending’ whistleblower

John Whitney and his attorney, Jayme Walker, on Thursday – during a closed session Tuesday afternoon.RELATED: Union says badge bending occurred at Vallejo Police Department, but for a different reasonWhitney had served on the Vallejo police force for 19 years when the city fired him in August 2019. He claims the police department targeted him for exposing a tradition of bending back the star points on the badges of officers who killed someone in the line of duty.“I took an oath to uphold the public trust and that’s what I did when I blew the whistle on badge bending,” Whitney said in a statement. “I shouldn’t have lost my career for trying to hold officers accountable. With its police force still suffering from staff shortages, Antioch will continue offering bonuses of up to $30,000 and other incentives to police officers joining its department. The council approved extending the bonus package for one year for transferring and entry-level officers this week on a 4-0-1 vote with Mayor Pro-Tem Tamisha Torres-Walker abstaining. The incentives are structured over five years, with $15,000 paid upfront along with other incentives as a way to recruit officers in what is now a highly competitive job market. That, coupled with the fallout from the recent racist police text scandal and FBI and Contra Costa District Attorney investigation of some officers has dwindled ranks even further, officials say.But before voting to extend the incentives, Councilman Mike Barbanica, a former Pittsburg police officer, asked to hear from Acting Police Chief Joe Vigil on the program’s success rate.“Has it been successful?” he asked. “How is it gonna be funded in the future? ...Person stabbed near perimeter of San Jose State campus
