NEW YORK (AP) — Ron Marinaccio retired Marcus Semien on a game-ending popup with two on in the ninth inning, Clay Holmes stranded a pair of runners in the eighth and the New York Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 1-0 Saturday after Aaron Judge said he isn’t close to returning from an injured right toe.Billy McKinney hit his fourth homer since he was brought up two weeks ago to replace Judge, who said before the game he has a torn ligament in his toe that causes pain while walking.McKinney’s fourth-inning drive off Jon Gray (6-3) bounced off the hand of a fan sitting about halfway up the right-field bleachers. McKinney has reached base in all 15 games with the Yankees this season.Pitching with a new haircut, Luis Severino (1-2) allowed five hits in six innings, and four relievers finished the Yankees’ fifth shutout. Severino was watching the final out from the clubhouse when Marinaccio secured New York’s fourth 1-0 win decided by a homer since 2009.“I was sweating inside here,” Severino...Rookie Tanner Bibee strikes out seven as the Guardians rally to beat the Brewers 4-2

CLEVELAND (AP) — Josh Naylor and David Fry had RBI singles in a two-run sixth inning, rookie Tanner Bibee struck out seven and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Saturday.Cleveland trailed 2-1 after five innings and tied the game on Naylor’s single off Hoby Milner that scored Amed Rosario. Fry delivered the go-ahead run with a two-out hit to left off Elvis Peguero that scored José Ramírez.“Hoby made a real good pitch to Naylor and, unfortunately, it got through,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “We still had a chance to get out of that inning, and Fry got a slider down and got a base hit. It’s tough giving up the lead at that point.”Bibee (4-2) worked six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, in his 11th start since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on April 26. The right-hander gave up three singles while matching his season high with 105 pitches.Emmanuel Clase earned his MLB-high 23rd save as four Guardians pitchers combined on the four-hitter. ...Reds’ 12-game winning streak ends as Braves prevail 7-6 in 8-homer slugfest

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — David Robertson got razzed in the bullpen by Phillies fans for the strange-but-true way he strained a calf in last season’s playoffs. Yes, the former Phillies reliever was injured when he jumped in the air while celebrating a homer by Bryce Harper.Robertson kept his feet — and the ball — on the ground in a victorious return trip to Philly for the Mets. He induced ground-ball double plays in the eighth and ninth innings that helped New York hold on for a 4-2 win Saturday over the Phillies.Robertson was presented with his NL championship ring in a brief ceremony before the game and showed off the bling that included 96 diamonds that spelled out “CHAMPIONS” at his locker. The right-handed reliever hushed the hecklers when he got potential go-ahead run Bryson Stott to ground into an inning-ending double play in the eighth. Robertson got Josh Harrison to hit into a game-ending double play and needed just 13 pitches to earn his 11th save.Roberson joked with fans that h...Piper’s crossing: Dozens to paddleboard from Bimini to Lake Worth to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis

LAKE WORTH, Fla. (WSVN) — Several people in South Florida have joined together on a journey for a noble cause, one that involves paddleboarding across the ocean.Bimini to South Florida is a crossing many make every day, but imagine making that 80-mile trek on a paddleboard. That’s exactly what dozens plan to do this weekend, all in the name of cystic fibrosis. “My daughter Piper was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 4 years old,” said Travis Suit.Suit launched the Piper’s Angels Foundation after his daughter was diagnosed with the genetic disease, which severely affects the lungs.“We learned about this amazing connection to the ocean and the healing benefits of saltwater for people with cystic fibrosis,” said Suit, who is the foundation’s executive director. “This father is on a mission to help those like Piper.Fast forward several years: they’re now celebrating the 10th crossing for cystic fibrosis.“The rallying is r...What scientists say keeps mosquitoes at bay

(CNN) — For as long as there have been humans, there have been mosquitoes buzzing around in hopes of a bite to eat.“We’re always in a war, a perpetual war against mosquitoes,” said Dr. Conor McMeniman, an assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute in Baltimore. It’s a war that often turns deadly — mosquitoes kill more people than any other animal as they spread diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus.Even if the mosquitoes near you don’t carry these diseases, they’re still a nuisance. Here’s the lowdown on how mosquitoes hunt us, what attracts them, and what scientists recommend for keeping them at bay.The science of mosquito bitesMost of the time, mosquitoes drink plant nectars and juices, and even help pollinate flowers. But when the time comes for female mosquitoes to produce eggs, the soon-to-be moms require extra protein, which they g...Derrick Rose hits free agency after Knicks decline option; Josh Hart extends deadline for player option

Derrick Rose’s tenure in New York — a two-stint rollercoaster that briefly resuscitated his career— is probably finished.Prior to Saturday night’s deadline, the Knicks declined the point guard’s $15.5 million team option for next season, sending Rose into free agency. The move was expected since Rose had no spot in Tom Thibodeau’s rotation. Still, there was a chance the Knicks kept Rose on the books to use his expiring contract in a trade.Rose, 34, was acquired via trade from the Pistons in 2021 and played an integral role in leading the Knicks to the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs that season. It earned him a lucrative contract that summer, but an ankle injury sabotaged Rose’s following season and he never recovered a consistent role. In his last two seasons, Rose appeared in a combined 53 games.Despite the demotion, Rose was lauded as a team leader throughout the roster and praised by Thibodeau. There’s a chance Rose r...Mayoral candidates make their final pitch to Torontonians ahead of Monday’s vote

Four months after former mayor John Tory resigned after revealing he had an inappropriate affair with a member of his staff, Torontonians are just days away from choosing his successor. The final weekend of the long and winding mayoral byelection campaign saw some of the top candidates make their final pitches to voters. Olivia Chow, who has maintained a steady and commanding lead in public opinion polls since joining the race, continued to push her message that this election is about two choices: the status quo or change. “In this election, we have a choice. We could continue with the status quo. We could continue to let this city decline. Or we could choose to come together and build a city that is affordable, more caring and safer, where everyone belongs.”This mayoral race has been deja vu for Chow, who was also a strong favourite heading into the late stages of the 2014 municipal vote, which saw her ultimately finish third behind winner John Tory and runner-up Doug F...Latest news
