KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Like father, like son. Joseph McDonald Jr., a junior at Kingston High School recently broke his own father's high jump record at 6'10", a record that stood for 36 years, set in 1987 at 6'8". According to the Kingston City School District, McDonald Jr. broke the record at the Jum Mitchell Invitational at the Armory Track in New York City. He won jumping 14 inches higher than any of his opponents. At least five people were taken to the hospital after a collision between an Amtrak train and a semi-truck in Ventura County Tuesday evening that blocked traffic and led to the suspension of train service overnight. The collision occurred in Somis, an unincorporated area of Ventura County, at around 6:20 p.m. on State Route 118 at Sand Canyon Road, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter, by the California Highway Patrol. Video of the crash scene obtained by KTLA showed a large response by Ventura County Firefighters who responded to the scene to help passengers safely off the train and triage those injured. The Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles will close on Jan. 31, 2024.The hotel, which opened in 2014 at 929 S. Broadway, announced its closure on Instagram."Since 2014, you’ve answered the call with fervor and feeling and so much love," the hotel wrote. "It’s been an honor to inhabit these hallowed halls and The Theatre for ten golden years, which feels as good a run as any."The building, which was built in the 1920s and was once the California Petroleum Building, will be converted "to a limited-service, rooms-only operation, managed via a tech platform," a representative for Ace Hotel Group told KTLA.While Ace operates the hotel, the building itself was purchased by Chesapeake Lodging Trust, a Maryland real estate investment trust, for $103 million in 2015. We all know the "big one" is coming to Southern California but we don't know when that massive earthquake will strike. A new study by the Los Angeles Times found that 6,000 Los Angeles-area buildings are in need of retrofitting. The Times constructed an interactive map that shows residents the status of the buildings they live and work in."A retrofit strengthens earthquake-vulnerable buildings to better withstand shaking, making them less likely to collapse or be damaged," the article stated.Cities that have recently passed retrofit laws include Los Angeles, Torrance, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, according to the report.Latest news
