DANVILLE – San Ramon Valley sophomore Sophia Jin had scored 30 runs this season, and 66 in two years on the varsity. But Tuesday afternoon was the first time that Jin could take her time rounding the bases. Her solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, a bomb that helped push San Ramon Valley to a 4-3 victory over Freedom and a berth in Friday’s North Coast Section Division I title game vs. California at St. Mary’s College, was the first time she had hit a ball over the fence.Jin later said she had never done it at any level of competition.Several players had their mouths open in amazement (or perhaps shock) while watching the ball sail through the air, awe turning into joy as they mobbed the sophomore at home plate. “Once I got that pitch, I swung as hard as I could,” Jin said, who then laughed and added, “I wasn’t really trying to hit a home run, but it happened.”DANVILLE – San Ramon Valley player Sophia Jin celebrates her home run. SEATTLE (AP) — Watching him during spring training, Seattle manager Scott Servais saw the potential in young righty Bryce Miller even if he was starting off in the minors. Thrust into duty with the Mariners due to injury, Miller is blowing away even the most lofty expectations that came with his arrival. Miller limited Oakland to two hits over six shutout innings to continue his spectacular early success, and the Mariners used a big inning to beat the Athletics 6-1 on Wednesday night.“There’s going to be some adjustments he’s going to need to make along the way, the more teams get to see him and the book gets on him a little bit more,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “But, you know, if it ain’t broke, you don’t fix it. And the results are outstanding.” Seattle scored five times and sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, providing more than enough offense for Miller and a trio of relievers.Miller (3-1) has pitched at least six innings in each of his five starts. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Two opposing visions for Turkey’s future are on the ballot when voters return to the polls Sunday for a runoff presidential election that will decide between an increasingly authoritarian incumbent and a challenger who has pledged to restore democracy.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a populist and polarizing leader who has ruled Turkey for 20 years, is well positioned to win after falling just short of victory in the first round of balloting on May 14. He was the top finisher even as the country reels from sky-high inflation and the effects of a devastating earthquake in February.Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of Turkey’s pro-secular main opposition party and a six-party alliance, has campaigned on a promise to undo Erdogan’s authoritarian tilt.
